Will Kate Middleton, By Wearing Black, Support #MeToo?

This year at the Golden Globes, besides the designer dresses and breathtaking outfits, on the red carpet we saw lots of attendees wearing black, trying to voice their support of the #MeToo and Times up movements.

And as the movement grows with more and more women coming forward with their own stories of abuse and discrimination in the film industry, it seems that this year’s BAFTA awards will be no different.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards takes place in London on February 18. And again the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been invited to the ceremony.

Will Kate Middleton By Wearing Black Will Support #MeToo

The Cut quotes a letter that was recently circulating by women in the U.K.’s film and TV industry. Itasks the BAFTA guests to “strong, unifying and the simple statement” by joining them in wearing black to the ceremony.

This raises the question, will the Duchess choose to wear black in support of this initiative? Kate Middleton has never publicly addressed the issue of women’s rights in particular. However, as Romper points out “her work speaks for itself.”

She has played a big part in charitable work concerning mental health, and support for mothers and children. In 2015 and 2016 she made two visits to women’s prisons. There she met with inmates and discussed addiction and the mental health issues they have experienced.

She also visited the Nelson Trust Women’s Centre, which is an organization that supports women in prisons, sex workers, and women who have suffered abuse.

Perhaps the reason why Kate hasn’t yet directly addressed the discrimination of women because its royal protocol dictates that members of the royal family refrain from making political statements.

This doesn’t mean that the women of the royal family have not used their clothing to imply a possible political standpoint in the past. Remember Queen Elizabeth II’s infamous ‘Brexit’ hat, a blue creation with yellow flowers that was not unlike the EU flag?

Kate wore black to the BAFTAs last year. So, if she picks something similar to her Alexander McQueen gown’s white floral pattern probably won’t cause a big shockwave.

Whatever she chooses to wear, we are sure that she will be gorgeous as ever.
