Last Tango in Paris rape scene caused a lot of controversy
Although filmed in 1973 Hollywood stars are openly speaking against the film’s director Bernardo Bertolucci.
The interview filmed 3 years ago in Paris at La Cinémathèque Française resurfaced again over the weekend. The director discusses the controversial scene from the film. In the movie Paul, a character played by Marlon Brando, uses a stick of butter to rape a young woman. Maria Schneider played Jeanne, the girl getting raped in the film.
Bernardo and Brando came up with an idea to use the butter as lubricant. The 19 year old Maria had no idea of the scene development until moments before shooting the scene.
As the director with two Oscars says in the video, he had been horrible to Maria because he didn’t tell her what was going on. And he sensed that Maria hated him and Marlon Brando for keeping it secret.
All that just to capture her more humiliated for the sake of the film.
Maria told the press that the sex scene between her and Brando was completely simulated. Marlon reassured her that it is just a movie and nothing real is going to happen. But she felt humiliated and a little raped by Marlon and Bernardo. And the tears she cried on the set were real.
Despite the statement of the actress, who died in 2011, several actors – including Jenna Fisher and Jessica Chastain accused the film for showing an act of “actual rape”.
Also Evan Rachel Wood responded to Chastain’s tweet describing Brando and Bernard as very sick individuals to think that was ok.
A lot of other celebrities turned to the social media to share their thoughts on the case. Chris Evans, Michael Cudlitz, Anna Kendrick and Jake Tapper are some of them. Lena Dunham posted a photo of Maria Schneider and her partner on her Instagram account to express her sadness for the actress’ public ordeal five years after her death.
Zelda Williams questioned Bertulocci’s judgment and his responsibilities as a director to take care of his cast and crew.
