Meghan Markle Recalls ‘Awkward’ First Meeting With William And Kate
Three episodes of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s highly-anticipated Netflix documentary were finally released on Thursday after months of speculation that the couple would star in a tell-all series.
As a TV actress who began dating the royal in 2016, Meghan discusses the challenges of press intrusion and fitting in with the royals.
On this theme, in episode two, Meghan Markle recalls the first time she met Prince William and Kate when the pair came over for dinner.
Meghan says: “Even when Will and Kate came over and I had met her for the first time… They came for dinner. I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.
“I was a hugger, always being a hugger I didn’t realize that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.
“I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside, carried through on the inside.
“That there is a forward-facing way of being. And then you close the door and you are like, ‘Oh, great. Okay, we can relax now’.”
Meghan’s relationship with Kate has been closely watched over the past years. It seems as if their complex relationship started off on the right foot, with the two aligning themselves together in a fast friendship. However, rumors of a growing rift between the two soon began to plague the royal family.
In Meghan’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan rebutted stories that she had made Kate cry at a bridesmaid fitting before her wedding to Harry.
After Oprah asked Meghan about these reports, she answered, “No, the reverse happened.”
“It was a really hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something. But she owned it, and she apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note apologizing. She did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, to just take accountability for it.”
