Stars and the controversial and profitable private shows

Stars despite the great tours can cash in big on private concerts.

But the expensive bookings can bring a lot of controversy. Here are some of the stars that aside the thick profit ended up criticized by the media.

Kanye West in 2013 received an offer of $3 million to perform at a wedding. Of course nothing was weird about that. The problem was that it was the wedding of the grandson of  Nursultan Nazarbayev, the President of Kazakhstan. The Kazakhstan President has been accused of human rights violations and torture by supervising groups.

In 2013 Jennifer Lopez received over $1 million for her performance. She performed a short set consisted of three songs for the China National Petroleum Corp. After that she “gifted” the President of Turkmenistan with a performance of “Happy Birthday”. The Turkmenistan leader has been also accused of human rights abuses.

Hillary Swank was paid to appear on Ramzan Kadyrov’s birthday party. In 2011 the singer Seal and actor Jean – Claude Van Damme were together with the Oscar winning actress at the birthday party. Ramzan Kadyrov – a Chechen leader was accused of abductions and brutal killings.

When the news hit the media, Swank apologized.

Two years before that, in 2009, Queen B performed for the son of Moammar Gadhafi. Beyonce received $1 million for singing 5 songs at the New Year’s Eve party. Later the Libyan dictator Gadhafi raised the public noise. So she donated her earnings to the Clinton – Bush Haiti Fund. After that 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and Nelly Furtado also donated money. They were all paid for performing on private shows for Gadhafi family members.

Mariah Carey even stated that she is horrified that she participated in that mess and hopes that this will be a lesson for all artists.
