Will Prince George Break Royal Tradition As He Faces Decision To Serve In The Military

Prince George could be set to break tradition as the young royal will reportedly be able to make up his own mind up over whether to join the military or not.

It has been reported that George, who will celebrate his tenth birthday later this week, will have a choice over whether he actually wants to follow tradition of serving in the armed forces.

Prince William and Prince Harry are known for their years of serving in the military, earning a mountain of credit for their hard work.

The reason behind the decision could be seen as a “strategic repositioning of the monarchy”, although this remains unclear.

According to a Telegraph article by journalist Melanie Phillips, some people are viewing the decision as “the monarchy modernising itself in an era that prioritises individual choice about how to live our lives.”

However, according to Ms Phillips, this could also be seen as “a shallow reaction”.

She added: “[The decision could suggest] a baleful failure to understand the profound connection between the monarchy, the defence of the nation and its identity.”

She suggested that, for centuries, serving your country has been a “rite of passage” for British monarchs, which could lead to the decision not going down too well.

George’s father, Prince William completed more than seven years of full-time military service.

In 2006, following a 44-week course as an Officer Cadet, William was commissioned as a British Army officer.

Fast forward a number of years, after leaving operational duties, Prince William retrained to become an air ambulance pilot.

From March 2015, the royal heir worked with the East Anglian Air Ambulance for more than two years.

Prince Harry served in the Army for ten years. The 38-year-old, who is no longer a senior royal, rose to the rank of Captain and took on two tours of Afghanistan during the decade.

As the eldest son of a heir, Prince George has his royal future carved out in front of him.

According to reports in the Mirror, the Prince and Princess of Wales are currently trying to “balance” his life as a prominent future royal figure.

After being kept in the dark about his future, it is thought that it was only in recent years that George was told about his fate.

Speaking to Fabulous, a royal source said that this was done to provide a “delicate balance to protect his childhood and innocence”.
