During the Earthshot Innovation Summit, which was held in NYC on Wednesday, CEO Hannah Jones announced that the second awards ceremony will be taking place in Boston on December 2.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were last in the US in 2014, when they visited New York City, the first join trip across the pond shortly followed their royal wedding in 2011, when the royal couple visited Los Angeles.
We already knew that Earthshot would be heading to the States after the current Prince of Wales William revealed it, appropriately, on the 53rd moon landing anniversary – as Earthshot takes inspiration from JFK’s Moonshot initiative.
The royal couple are hoping to spotlight and celebrate the “inspiring city” for their work tackling climate change, according to a statement.
Prince William got Red Sox All-Star XanderBogaerts to announce Boston as the next host city via a video announcement. The player appeared at the iconic Fenway Park, saying, “And we will be doing it right here in Boston.”
The host partners for the event will be the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation alongside Mayor Michelle Wu and the City of Boston.
Prince William missed Wednesday’s Innovation Summit in NYC due to the unfortunate passing of Queen Elizabeth, but he did manage to appear in a video message.
“Although it is the saddest of circumstances that means I cannot join you in person today, I am pleased to join you in video form as you gather in New York for the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit,” said the Prince Wales. “During this time of grief, I take great comfort in your continued enthusiasm, optimism and commitment to the Earthshot Prize and what we are trying to achieve.”
“Protecting the environment was a cause close to my grandmother’s heart, and I know she would have been delighted to hear about this event and the support you’re all giving our Earthshot finalists, the next generation of environmental pioneers.”
William ended his statement by saying, “Both Catherine and I are so excited to be coming to Boston in December, and we look forward to seeing you all very soon.”
