The Meaning Behind The Name Of The Cambridges New Dog

We’ve known that the Cambridges’ dog was cute from the moment she joined the family back in 2020, one thing we didn’t know, however, was her name!

The adorable black cocker spaniel’s name was just revealed by People to be Orla, and it’s packed with meaning.

The Duke and Duchess have certainly done their research, Orla is a Celtic name meaning “golden princess” and the cute doggo definitely is a golden princess.

The Cambridges dog has recently made the news and not just for her name being revealed, but because she was featured in one of the portraits of Princess Charlotte released by the Palace for her seventh birthday.

Orla joined the Cambridge family just in time to fill part of the void left behind by the unfortunate passing of their previous dog Lupo, having arrived shortly before his passing in November 2020.

“Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. – W & C,” wrote the Cambriges on Instagram.

Orla was a gift from James Middleton, the Duchess’ brother, who is a massive animal lover and founder of healthy dog food company Ella & Co. Even his Instagram bio is evidence of this, reading: “Dog Dad to Ella, Zulu, Inka, Luna, Mabel&Nala.” Orla being one of Luna’s puppies.

At the time a family friend said: “The new puppy is adorable and the whole family are besotted, they were devastated when Lupo passed away, as any dog owner will understand, but got the new puppy before he died. It was hoped that a younger dog would give Lupo some company and give him a little more life and energy.”
